The safest and most effective whitening raw material – arbutin

Arbutin

Arbutin, also known as arbutin,
White needle crystal or powder,
It is named after it is extracted from the leaves of bearberry.

Arbutin is one of the safest and most effective whitening raw materials currently popular abroad, and it is also the most competitive skin whitening and freckle removal active agent in the 21st century.

In cosmetics, it can effectively whiten and remove freckles on the skin, and gradually fade and remove freckles, chloasma, melanin, acne and age spots on the skin. It is highly safe and has no side effects such as irritation and sensitization. Arbutin is easily hydrolyzed and should be used at a pH of 5-7. In order to stabilize the performance, an appropriate amount of antioxidants such as sodium bisulfite and vitamin E are usually added to better achieve whitening, freckle removal, moisturizing, softness, wrinkle removal, and anti-inflammatory effects.

Arbutin reduces the production of melanin by inhibiting the activity of tyrosinase, an enzyme that produces melanin. Its principle of action is similar to the whitening drug hydroquinone.
However, hydroquinone has side effects and requires many precautions. It must be used under the guidance and monitoring of a doctor. There are more glucose molecules in the structure of arbutin than hydroquinone.
It has low irritation and can be freely added to skin care products with an upper concentration limit of up to 7%.

The active molecules of arbutin can penetrate the basal layer of the skin for deep spot lightening, and can treat chloasma, dark spots, sun spots, and pigmentation left over from drug allergies.
All have strong therapeutic effects, but if the concentration is too low, the durability of the effect will be weakened, so 5% concentration is the safest and most efficient concentration for lightening.
The concentration of 5% is faster than vitamin C in lightening the spots, and the lightening effect is stable and will not cause irritation to the skin.

Arbutin will be reduced to hydroquinone after being absorbed by the skin. This has caused some people to doubt the safety of arbutin and believe that arbutin may still be produced.
Hydroquinone-like side effects. The most common saying is that “skin care products containing arbutin cannot be used during the day, otherwise the skin will not be whitened and will become darker.”
In fact, there is no need to worry. Tests have shown that only arbutin with a concentration exceeding 7% may be sensitive to light. Therefore, 7% is a safety critical point. There are clear regulations on the addition of ingredients in skin care products. The maximum concentration limit is 7%. Within this concentration range, arbutin is not enough to cause photosensitivity, so it cannot be used without light protection.

When absorbed through the skin and decomposed by light, it will be reduced to hydroquinone, producing a whitening effect. The concentration of hydroquinone in arbutin skin care products is less than 20 ppm (that is, 20 parts per million). Under such a low concentration limit, hydroquinone will not cause side effects such as darkening of the skin.
If you are afraid to use skin care products during the day just because they contain arbutin, then you don’t have to, unless the skin care products containing arbutin also add other skin care ingredients that need to be protected from light.

In short, you should choose skin care products from reliable brands, and no matter what you apply, use sun protection during the day.
